A new species of Bryconadenos (Characiformes: Characidae) from the rio Curuá, rio Xingu drainage, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Menezes,Naércio A.; Netto-Ferreira,André Luiz; Ferreira,Katiane M..
A second inseminating species bearing club cells organized into an anal-fin gland in sexually active males belonging to the genus Bryconadenos was recently discovered in the rio Xingu drainage and is described as new. It is distinguished from B. tanaothoros by the presence of a conspicuous dark blotch at the humeral region, and fewer scale rows between dorsal-fin origin and anal-fin origin. Males of B. weitzmani have longer pelvic fins at sizes beyond 30 mm SL. Bryconadenos weitzmani is further distinguished from B. tanaothoros by the cup shape of the anal-fin gland, its lower part much more developed than the upper, whereas in B. tanaothoros there is just a slit separating the almost equally developed upper and lower parts.

Bovine sperm cell motility after incubation in follicular fluid PAB
Vargas Júnior,Sergio Farias; Costa,Vitória Gasperin Guazzelli; Oliveira,Fernando Caetano de; Goularte,Karina Lemos; Haas,Cristina Sangoi; Gasperin,Bernardo Garziera; Lucia Júnior,Thomaz.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate sperm cell motility after intrafollicular artificial insemination (IFAI) in vivo or after incubation in follicular fluid in vitro. In the in vivo experiment, IFAI was performed, followed by the recovery of follicular content 1 to 4 hours later, in order to assess sperm motility. In the in vitro experiment, spermatozoa from a pool of commercial frozen-thawed semen were evaluated for their kinetics after incubation for 1 or 3 hours, either pure (pool, control group) or in follicular fluid (FF). A low motility of sperm cells was observed in the FF samples, both in vitro and in vivo. In vitro, the main parameters negatively affected in the sperm cells incubated in FF, compared with the control, were: total...

Cryopreservation of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) spermatozoa in experimental and production simulating conditions ArchiMer
Fauvel, Christian; Suquet, Marc; Dreanno, Catherine; Zonno, Vincenzo; Menu, Bruno.
A sperm cryopreservation protocol adapted from turbot, was tested on sea bass using either 250-mu L straws or 1.5-mL cryovials. A dilution to 1/3 in Mounib's extender and a cooling rate of 65 degrees C.min(-1) allowed frozen sperm to recover an initial motility similar to that of fresh sperm at thawing; however, significant differences in motility (P < 0.001, n = 10 fish semen) were observed at further post-activation times, the motility decrease being faster in thawed sperm. At the experimental scale, triplicate inseminations of 2-mL aliquots (approximately 2 000 eggs) showed a significant fertility decay of thawed sperm compared to that of fresh sperm (P < 0.01, n = 12 fish semen) when a discriminating 35.10(3) spermatozoa to egg ratio was applied....

Cryopreservation of sperm in marine fish ArchiMer
Suquet, Marc; Dreanno, Catherine; Fauvel, Christian; Cosson, J; Billard, R.
Since the first work of Blaxter in 1953, fish sperm cryopreservation has been attempted on about 30 marine species. The present paper reviews the techniques used and the results published in these species. Particular attention is paid to the handling procedure of sperm before freezing, the problems of semen ageing and semen contamination with urine. The quality of frozen-thawed semen was evaluated using previously standardized biotests, such as a two-step motility activation technique adapted for the different species and fertilization assays using a discriminating insemination technique. Most extenders used in marine fish are saline or sugar solutions. From the investigated cryoprotectants, dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) generally leads to the best results....

Heat identification by 17β-estradiol and progesterone quantification in individual raw milk samples by enzyme immunoassay Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Domènech,Anna; Pich,Sara; Arís,Anna; Plasencia,Carmen; Bach,Alex; Serrano,Alicia.
Background: There is a substantial decline in first-service-pregnancy-rate in dairy cows. In this regard, future prospects are to measure milk hormones on-farm and progesterone levels in milk are not enough to precise ovulation unless connected to other data. The objectives of this study were to investigate whether 17β-estradiol could be measured from individual cow milk samples using a commercially available non-radiolabelled enzyme immunoassay kit (EIA) with no previously reported milk application, and whether those detections could precisely illustrate 17β-estradiol pre-ovulation peak in spite of its limited concentration and short manifestation in milk. Results: Milk sample treatments for progesterone and 17β-estradiol EIA...

Monitoring the nutritional and reproductive state of dairy cows through the presence of urea in milk BABT
Grande,Paula Adriana; Santos,Geraldo Tadeu dos; Ribeiro,Hilton; Damasceno,Júlio César; Alcalde,Claudete Regina; Barbosa,Orlando Rus; Horst,José Augusto; Santos,Fabio Seiji dos.
The effects of farm, parity (PO) and month of parturition on milk production, percentage of fat and protein, somatic cell count (SCC), and milk urea nitrogen (MUN) concentration were assessed on four specialized dairy farms using 120 cows. Also, the effects of MUN on gestation rate (GR) and artificial insemination rate (AIR) in early lactation were studied. The parameters of production and milk quality were similar among farms and were not influenced by the month of parturition. Farm D presented the highest MUN concentration. Concentration of MUN, percentages of fat and protein and SCC were not influenced by PO. Cows with a value of MUN between 10.1 and 13.0 mg/dL had the highest AIR and GR between days 55 and 70 postpartum and after 70 days in milk. These...

Oral progesterone supplementation for beef cattle after insemination in TAI programs PAB
Loiola,Marcus Vinícius Galvão; Bittencourt,Rodrigo Freitas; Rodrigues,Alexandra Soares; Ferraz,Priscila Assis; Lima,Marcos Chalhoub Coelho; Carvalho,Caio Victor Damasceno; Ribeiro Filho,Antonio de Lisboa.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of supplementation with melengestrol acetate (MGA), after timed artificial insemination (TAI), on the conception rate of Nellore cows, according to cyclicity during the protocol, estrus expression between intravaginal device withdrawal and insemination, and diameter of the largest follicle at the time of insemination, in order to identify predictors of the use of MGA. Multiparous lactating cows (577) were subjected to a hormonal protocol for ovulation synchronization. On day -2 of the protocol, the animals were painted with a marker on the base of their tail. On day 0, they were evaluated for estrus expression; the preovulatory follicle diameter (POFD) was measured by ultrasonography, and the...

Reproductive biology and development of gill glands in the inseminating characid, Macropsobrycon uruguayanae Eigenmann, 1915 (Cheirodontinae: Compsurini) Neotropical Ichthyology
Azevedo,Marco A.; Malabarba,Luiz R.; Burns,John R..
The reproductive biology and development of the gill gland are described for Macropsobrycon uruguayanae, an inseminating characid species of the tribe Compsurini, subfamily Cheirodontinae. Between April 2001 and March 2002, 117 males and 143 females of this species were collected in the rio Ibicuí, Uruguay basin in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Reproductively active individuals were present during most months sampled, indicating lack of a well-defined seasonal reproductive period. Several maturing females were found to be inseminated before completing full maturation. Histological analyses demonstrated spermatozoa within the ovaries of females in different stages of gonadal maturation collected during most months. No immature females had...

Reproductive characteristics of characid fish species (Teleostei, Characiformes) and their relationship with body size and phylogeny Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Azevedo,Marco A..
In this study, I investigated the reproductive biology of fish species from the family Characidae of the order Characiformes. I also investigated the relationship between reproductive biology and body weight and interpreted this relationship in a phylogenetic context. The results of the present study contribute to the understanding of the evolution of the reproductive strategies present in the species of this family. Most larger characid species and other characiforms exhibit a reproductive pattern that is generally characterized by a short seasonal reproductive period that lasts one to three months, between September and April. This is accompanied by total spawning, an extremely high fecundity, and, in many species, a reproductive migration. Many species...

Use of assisted reproductive technology to separate sperm from human immunodeficiency virus infected men resulting in pregnancy among serodiscordant couples BJID
Schuffner,Alessandro; Lisboa,Ana Paula; Rosa,Vinicius Bonato da; Silva,Monica Maria Gomes da.
Due to HIV care improvement, discordant couples more frequently seek help in order to conceive their own biological child. Besides the advance of antiretroviral therapy, unprotected intercourse is not a complete safe option, carrying a low but still present risk of HIV transmission. We report 10 serodiscordant couples in whom the male partner is HIV positive, submitted to sperm washing and intrauterine insemination. The procedure resulted in four pregnancies and no HIV transmission to mother or child was observed. Techniques of assisted reproduction can help HIV discordant couples to conceive biological offspring and is a safer option than unprotected intercourse.

Zygoparity in Characidae - the first case of internal fertilization in the teleost cohort Otomorpha Neotropical Ichthyology
Fukakusa,Clayton Kunio; Mazzoni,Talita Sarah; Malabarba,Luiz Roberto.
Abstract Most teleosts are externally fertilizing, with internal fertilization occurring as a relatively rare event. Until now, Euteleosteomorpha is the only teleost cohort known to undergo internal fertilization. In the teleost cohort Otomorpha, it has been recorded the presence of sperm in the ovaries of some species of Characiformes and Siluriformes, but no fertilized eggs have been found so far in the female reproductive tract. It has been presumed that oocytes can be released into the water with associated spermatozoa and only there becomes fertilized, and the term insemination has been used to characterize the strategy adopted by these fish. Here, we present the discovery of the first case of internal fertilization in the teleost cohort Otomorpha, in...
